The Last Film I saw in the Cinema

The last film I watched in the cinema was The Great Gatsby directed by Baz Luhrmann based of Scott Fitzgerald's phenomenal novel. I heard about the movie from a friend via twitter and youtube which enable me to share on other social medias. I have read the novel, so I was interested to see how they would portray the story in the movie, comparing it to the classic 1974 original version directed by Jack Clayton. I watched the trailer before the movie so I could have an idea of how it is going to be like even though I know the storyline. The trailer made me feel intrigued  to watch the movie, because even though the novel is set in the roaring 20's I was amazed how Luhrmann was able to keep that time period but also add a hint of modernism, with intertwine jazz music with hip hop/RnB/Rap mainstream music which helped today's young audience engage with the trailer and get excited. However the trailer did make me feel worried that the movie was going to be quite distance from the novel and not grasp the true essence of the story.

Conventions of a trailer:

  1. They all feature a disclaimer of what age group is suitable to watch the movie
  2. Titles: They tell the audience the director/ actors who are involved in the film, it attracts the audience along when the movie is going to be out.
  3. Sound: plays an important role, it parallels the mood, genre of the trailer mostly to create an adrenaline of excitement for the audience as well as make the audience feel engage if it's popular. Action movies usually use mainstream music.
  4. Show the main character
  5. Montage editing
